Let's tallk about Club Penguin (and it's many Private Servers)
It is Club Penguin's 20th Anniversary, and today I am here to talk about Club Penguin, its shutdown, and its many revivals/private servers.
Now what is Club Penguin? Club Penguin was an MMO virtual world game that ran from 2005 to 2017. The game involves the player playing as a cartoon penguin in an icy island. The game played much like other MMO games at the time, where you could customize your character, interact with others, play minigames, and take care of a pet.
The game became popular with people across the Internet, spanning memes and private servers. The game became so popular that Disney acquired the game in 2007, and Club Penguin wasn't the same after that. On January 30, 2017, Disney announced that Club Penguin would be shut down, leading to multiple people making speedruns of Club Penguin shutting down the day it happened, on March 30, 2017.
After the shutdown of Club Penguin, multiple private servers emerged, emulating the experience of the original game. What makes these private servers different from the original game is the fact that everyone gets free, permanent membership plus custom items. Now one private server I do want to talk about was Club Penguin Rewritten, probably one of the most well-known private servers out there. When it launched on February 12, 2017, it became very popular. While it ws about to be shut down in March 4, 2018, community support led to the game returning on April 27, 2018. This game also became popular during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the game was mired in controversy due to poor moderation and . Ultimately, Club Penguin Rewritten was shut down on April 13, 2022 after an investigation from the police after a takedown request from Disney. There are also cases of other private servers being DMCA'd by Disney.
